Ugh. Alright. Where -exactly- are enemies allowed to spa
« on: June 01, 2008, 11:55:00 pm »

I had an excellent fort up and running and an entire ambush decides to spawn behind my well-placed traps. None had been sprung, either.

So... ah... what's the deal? >.<

They spawn on every edge of the map with a path to a dwarf. They can't spawn inside/behind trap layers, assuming you've made a full circle. You probably have a small path in somewhere. Plug it, and you should be fine.

What was ambushing? If it was goblins there must be a gap, if it was kobolds, well, they don't give a damn about most traps  :p

Remember diagonal movement - and remember stonefall and cage traps must be loaded before they can spring.

Other than that, yeah, you must have a gap somewhere, as enemies spawn at map edges only.

within a few tiles of the map edge, actually.  someone reported seeing spawns inside a tunnel that was within 5 squares of the edge.

Ambushes spawn at the edge of the map, but they are hidden until a dwarf notices them.  That means that a hidden ambush can easily sneak behind your defenses, and you wouldn't notice until they are already within your compound.

I just had a siege spawn in a location that can't reach my fort or any of my dwarves.  The location they spawned into is so tiny they all have to double/triple up on tiles.  It is along the east edge of the screen.  Water is one/two squares off the edge.  They are stuck in place by one tree above them and two below.

I want to free them / fight them but I am not sure how to. Digging below is out of the question because it's all damp.  In a season the water will freeze and if they are still around they'll be able to reach my base.

I had a siege spawn on the frozen ocean.  Hilariously, they didn't bother approaching my fortress.  Eventually, the water thawed and they all just drowned.

I've never had enemies come in underground ...

Also it's possible that one squad walked over your traps in one place, and clogged them, letting other squads through. A goblin dying on a trap doesn't alert you to anything, although the huge blood splatter on the walls and the sudden pile of stupid goblin loot is a pretty good indication.

If you installed any mods, it's possible the goblins have trap avoidance like kobolds?

And if you're using stonefall traps you do need to reload them. But you also need to reload missile weapon traps. And if your traps weren't cleaned since the last guest they might still be clogged.
