Drill the mens morale and endurance and have them make ready to march.
Have the men guarding animals ask around the village to find out if anybody else wants to join either as a soldier or in any other role before they rejoin the rest of the regiment.

Teach them how to make various useful things with the shovels quickly--trenches, berms, whatever. Also train their endurance. Ride off enthusiastically to battle when called!

Men, it seems we are going to start marching next month.  I have faith that we will be met with victory should we remain true to our training.  In the mean time, we will improve our marksmanship and, as usual, endurance.  No matter where we end up needed, we will leave an impact.  NCOs...

I don't know why the fuck you guys keep requesting guns and ammo -.-^^

As you arrive you're two NCOs are awaiting training orders and have several complaints to you, mostly about the bad quality of different equipment and weapons.
