Has anyone had any success at making a sustainable dwarfmade waterfall? Last time I tried to put one in my dining room it started to flood the fortress.

I tried the exact same thing and it ended the exact same way. I had probably over 10 pumps pumping out, and 1 pump pumping in, and all the out-pumps were surrounding where the water was supposed to land... it still flooded.

I don't know why it does that either. I think maybe the waterfall causes the water to get multiplied.

Try making a view z-levels deep "catching" room under the dining room, so the water falls directly in there while passing the dining room, but doesnt actually HIT the room. Then pump it. Maybe that will work?

The dining room waterfall in Foldedarmors is like this:

code:

~~~~~~~~~#
########~#######
      ~~~     #  # = rock
     ~~#~~    #  ~ = water
######"###"#####  " = grate
#####~~~~~~~~~~~
################

Of course, this benefits from having a river above and a cliff for ejection of used water.

If you're having trouble with too much water on the lower channel, you can use a pressure plate to close the upper channel when there's too much water (5/7 or 6/7) on the lower one.

I have, the problem you're experiencing most likely is because your waterfall is too full (I experienced that, dwarfy drowned).

code:
Side view of my falls:

 77777777
 7+----+7
171htth171
-+7+----+7+-
|7|    |7|
+-+    +-+

Top view (not true water flow):
Z = +1

#####7776543211_
777777777654321_
#####7776543211_
   __665432111_

    ___________

That isn't the true waterlevels (due to the amount of time since I last refilled my holding chamber, plus a bunch of rocks obscure it and I can't be bothered to look at each tile), but it should give you enough of an idea.

I hope you noticed that the falling water can spread to surrounding tiles if there is 7 units of water beneath it. And that is what causes the flooding.

I'm currently trying to set up waterfalls all around the queen's throne room. I'll tell you how it worked.

I managed it, but then I had a chasm to funnel all the excess water to so it was pretty easy. My current fortress doesn't seem to have one though (at least I haven't found one yet) so it might be a bit harder . . .

hello,

I succeed to build a Waterfall in my fortress (work perfectly since 1 year in the game). At the begin i just want to build a wash machine. (I think that it can be clean mud on dwarf but finaly not ^^).
I'll Give you here the construction schéma i use for it and how activate it. (if it can give you some idea)

Look the picture: Image

How it work:
First you need to construct the machine.(the easiest things     :)

i think you can made the same in a dinner room. But like you see keep in mind that you need at least 1 grate around the grate where water fall. Or water flood your fortress. :P

hop.     :D

so i just tried to build a very simple waterfall, using a connection from the river, leading to a floor grate, which sat on top of a 3 stories high room (open space), with one tile of wall at the bottom, right beneath the top grate, which in turn was surrounded by floor grates.

when i opened a flood gate at the top, water poured in all the way to the end of the connection where the top floor grate was. but no water came out beneath and i was like wtf..
so just to check, i built a channel on a nearby tile, then connected it to the first connection. and of course water instantly flowed into and flooded the room beneath.
so i checked the channels below the grates at the bottom. no liquid what so ever.
what am i doing wrong here?

Some questions to ask:

- Have you dig a channel on the Grate's place (Dig a channel and then put the grate on the open space ^^)?
(If not, water not pass through and hurt on the ground under the grate)

-If you use the river directly (an infinite come of water), what did you made whit all this water?
(If there are a room under the grate its finish to be full, and if you stop the come of the river whit a floodgate the waterfall disapear   :)

All here in this post is no sure at 100%. ^^

yeah thanks, i didnt realize you had to create open space on the same level as you put the grates, figured the dwarves would be smart enough to make a hole beneath them, and not just lay 'em out on the floor ..guess not  :)
didnt know about the water falling on adjacent tiles, guess i have to re-plan some :P

Couldn't you also use the pump method for aquifers?

Only difference is, the water is being funneled toward the pumps, which then suck up the water and store them in their little reservoirs.

I've never actually done this before, so I'm not certain if it actually works.  If not, you could always pump it up to the surface and direct it back into a brook or something.

I never try too.
But i try one thing -> to put water on a brook.

For my first test "water wheel,millstone and a pump" i build it out. (i realize it for test before the subterran application. I dont want to flood my fortress).
I use a brook for it, dug a channel which directly go to water wheel which activate a pump to return on brook.

When i open it, the water ejected by the pump begin to go on other side, like if you put it on ground. Because i not build a lever for stop it, i send a dwarf for destroy the gear and then stop the flood. But he not succeed and the water flood all this dangerous machine which continu to work.

After 1 min i have one screen of flood on the map. And 5 min later an immense beautiful pool above my fortress (i built doors for close all entance and block dwarf for going out).  :)

If someone find a good way to push out water i take it!  :)

Funny experience.

If you are going to take water out and put it back into the brook, it is best to damn it first.

If you damn the Brook it won't flood, but the exit portion will drain.  If you take water out of the Reservoir and then put it back in on the other side, it should leave the map.
