Multiple Shield Holding
« on: December 16, 2012, 09:55:27 pm »

I remember reading on the wiki some time ago that an adventurer wielding a one handed weapon and wield as many shields as they like, giving them multiple chances to block and such.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Exploit#Urist_McAdventurer_the_Shield-wall

In any case, I just wanna ask some clarifications and more info. Like how true this is, and what are the downsides if there are any? Does it lower your hit accuracy with weapons? Is there any point in wielding multiple shields still once you have legendary shield skill?

To be even more specific, I'm currently playing adventurer mode on the Genesis Reborn mod due to some recommendations. I'm not sure just how much has changed because the mod doesn't seem to have one documentation of everything added or changed, but I'm wondering if there are any significant changes to the combat system that would render old adventurer techniques/exploits obsolete.

The sheer weight of multiple shields will have an impact on your speed and therefore slowing down all actions. Other creatures e.g. attack more often before you can react. I've read, that the shield's material is not important so go for lighter materials like wood.

I was told that denser materials actually give you a better chance of blocking (I think copper was the best in that regard), but I may have been misinterpreting the comment.

One can bash, as a form of an attack, with your shield(s).

I believe that is the reason for pushing copper as the best standard material for a shield, it hits hardest being so dense, or weighty, or however it's calculated. For blocking it makes no difference, if you happen to find one made of cardboard ( featherwood? ) you're good to go.

I like to use three shields concurrently. This seems to give me sufficient protection from everything without weighing me down too much.

Right now I'm tripping out over the fact that I'm wielding steel shields. Thank you for that ambush Mr. Kobold.  A steel shield means nothing as far as any bonuses go, I just feel so special having never had one before.

I don't think losing guts actually kills you, you just throw up and pass out and bleed to death.
This was supposed to be a cool upgrade. All I got was more hostile zombies.

And while I'm on this topic, I'm sure you can find people here who swear by 12 shields, minimum.

Way I hear it you can run your guy without any weapons, just shields, and do quite well. If that's the case I bet you'd want one of them to be copper, for bashing, and the rest can be whatever.

And train your biting skill, for the occasional tough guy who refuses to go down.

If you are playing my mod, biting won't help. Otherwise equip as many shields as you like. I always use one, but that's a limitation I force on myself.

Thanks for the clarification everyone.

I ran into a Goblin Outcast in a Lair, I figured he would be as easy as the several other peasant outcasts hanging out in the other nearby lairs. I was surprised that as soon as he spotted me out of sneaking, his apparently super godly wrestle/fighting skills broke my legs, snapped my arms and then punched me in the head sending me flying and impacting to death, all within 3 turns! The shields, they did nothing  :(

But yeah, I used 5 iron kite shields and they seemed to work great. I don't know what that goblin had that allowed him to wrestle and punch me through shields though, but he seemed absolutely insane.

One more question, does it matter that both my hands are wielding the shields? Whenever I remove shields from my pack I find they distribute themselves across both my hands, one of them is wielding the weapon.

yes, wielding shields in both hands matters
you get a penalty to hitting stuff if you have more than 1 things in your weapon hand(s)

how do I shift stuff between hands? I only know how to 'r'emove stuff from my bag but not how to choose which hand holds it.

Multiple shields without the proper training causes you to drop in speed greatly leading to many turns of being hit but during that time due to the amount of shields plus blocking it causes a very high increase in training

I first drop everything on the ground for the weapon I want to use I pick it up first then pick up the rest causing your (A)ttack for the weapon to be at the first letters in order
