Kickstarter: Unwritten
« on: January 15, 2013, 11:50:35 am »

I just found a new Kickstarter that intrigued me, and seemed like it might intrigue other people here.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1599677835/unwritten-that-which-happened/comments

From the Kickstarter page:
"In Unwritten the player creates and guides a nomadic clan on a one-way journey across a dangerous wilderness. It is a turn based strategy game with maps, story elements, units, abilities, and enemies that are all randomly generated. Along the way decisions (and death) are permanent, and each play session is unique.

Within the team we often call it "Sid Meier's Civilization meets Oregon Trail". It could also be called a "strategy rogue-like" since each area map feels a bit like a "dungeon" in the classic role playing game Rogue. However, in Unwritten you're controlling many units at once that share global resources like food and money.

- Delve into a turn based strategy game with meaningful, permanent decisions
- Play as successive generations of a nomadic clan, passing stories and legends down through the ages
- Experience infinite novelty through randomly generated maps, units, abilities, and enemies
- Make decisions that become a part of your personal "story", affecting your ability to barter and ally with rival clans
- Make the trek to "God Mountain", a place of final judgement and potential glory
- Experience a rich, exotic world inspired by international traditions of story-telling
- Make your own game modules using the same tools the developer used to make the game"

Sounds neat. Definitely seems like it's borrowing a lot of themes from King of Dragon Pass as well. Not wild about what looks like the in-game art aesthetic, but that seems to be the norm lately for me when it comes to Kickstarters. $75,000 would seem to be right in that middle space between asking too much for an unknown project/idea...and asking too little.

The don't have a big portfolio of past work to brag about, but at least they have some industry experience.

Looking forward to it. I may back when there's a little bit more known about the project.

I like the Hex-grid environment they are using for map-making. It should lead to some interesting random maps. I will follow this one since it looks pretty good as far as art style and concept :D

Digging's a lot like surgery, see -- you grab the sharp thing and then drive the sharp end of the sharp thing in as hard as you can and then stuff goes flying and then stuff falls out and then there's a big hole and you're done. I kinda wish there was more screaming, but rocks don't hurt so I guess it can't be helped.

This sounds right up my alley.  I hope they manage to make their goal.

well for about two-3 days in they have an okay amount of funding which is nice to see.  However the art style just looks horrific for me, especially the whole them trying to make everything look like paper cut-outs... definite no for me there.

Ha ha, I kind of like the paper-cutout style.  Although the terrain looks a little depressing with all that brown.

Anyone know much about the developer aside from dishonored? On the king of dragon pass note, they hadn't heard of it when they made the framework, but it was still pointed out to them and they "did draw inspiration, here and there". They appear to like that "They don't explain away things that might be culturally uncomfortably for gamers, they just put confidence in those ideas and let them ride.", so that could be interesting.

I hear they're mostly sticking to the tundra, of an The Never Ending Story variety. What exactly does that mean?
