I need to cull some infected dwarves without 'repercussions'...
« on: December 13, 2012, 04:33:49 pm »

Short story: Embarked with some terrifying biome squares that causes repellent rain which seems to cover my dwarves inside and out with blisters on every targetable body part... This causes them to constantly be dizzy and in pain. They work at about a third of the normal speed and thus I had deemed them useless, especially as only the stupider dwarves have managed to get themselves infected.

However, after the first wave of them died it nearly lost my fort to tantrum spirals... So I need an 'effective' way to obliterate some poorly people, as let's face it, they're an eyesore and more of a hindrance to the fort than the goblins.

Will an atom smasher let me get rid of them without the other dwarves caring? If so, I have no idea how to build one and the wiki doesn't give very clear instructions.

An atomsmasher will do. If nobody sees a dwarf dying, he is just missing and does not cause a bad thought. You just build a raising bridge and connect it to a lever. Raise the bridge, burrow the dwarfs under it. When they are standing under the bridge, pull the lever to lower the bridge. You should then get a "Urist McDwarf has been missing for a week" message later, without any tantrums. So you get away with murder, it's the perfect crime.

You know, I think you put your apostrophes in the wrong place.  Because "Cull" is a great euphemism.  I mean, you're trying to avoid repercussions, right?

Which reminds me of the point here.  I think you may get some upset Dwarves who lost their friends/family, but shouldn't be too bad.

I got, "Urist McBlister has been crushed by a drawbridge" and now my dwarves are mad... I did it behind a locked door where no one could see D: It seems I only got that on a few of the dwarves, the others have been missing for a week.

Somebody must have seen it, it works perfectly fine normally. Was it one dwarf or several? It could be possible that they witness each others deaths or something...

EDIT: Ok, sorry, I didn't think about that. So it only works with one at a time.

No, it doesn't take witnesses.  The fact their loved ones died should be enough to cause unhappy thoughts.
Unless things have changed since I last played.  I never did pay that much attention, I suppose.

It was a whooole bunch... Funny enough, only one of each bunch has been reported as missing, they must have been the last to die. I shall note that down for next time, only cull one at a time! It seems alright though, no one has actually got mad enough to become violent, I shall now bribe them with fancy trinkets and gold furniture.

just to sum up this entire thread:

Atomsmash dwarves elves one at a time to ensure no witnesses.

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

I atomsmashed a bunch of dwarves, and all but one were seen being smashed. The last guy was "missing".

The definitive guide to disappearances:
1. Make an atom smasher in a remote corner of the fort, and a bunch of blank slabs.
2. Atom smash undesirables one by one.
3. Once you get the "missing for a week" messages, engrave slabs for the dwarves and build the slabs.
4. Profit! There will be no unhappy thoughts as long as the slabs prevent ghosts from appearing.

All you need is a 1x1 room anywhere with a door and a 1x1 drawbridge in it, then burrow your unwanted dwarves in one at a time.

If you feel more sadistic, just wall them off in 1x1 rooms and wait, or have 1x1 chutes down into the SMR.

I'm disappointed that no one has mentioned magma as a solution.  Just force them to channel into a magma sea so that they fall in and get washed away into the great great depths of the abyss.

Only glorious dwarves deserve a burial at (magma) sea. It is an honor to become one with the lifeblood of Armok.

Bridges are the way to go for jerkwads. It's how I get rid of my vermin, so, I approve of this message.

my understanding is that this is unsuitable for mass disposal due to the fact that dwarfs will sometimes notice the previous dwarf (if they haven't been destroyed by the SMR yet) and report them as missing. this is much easier to control with an atomsmasher because you know the second it drops, whatever was underneath is *instantly* gone forever.

Well, basically any method will do, as long as victim is isolated and it's corpse will not be found. For example, a pit with something angry and firebreathing. Or just wall them away, preferably under the mayor quarter.
