Trying to Remove Diacritics - Quick Question
« on: January 01, 2013, 09:08:56 am »

I wanted to remove diacritics from my language files, since I use a tileset that replaces them with little pictures of trees and levers and things.

I have removed the diacritics as described at the wiki here: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Utility:Accent_Removal. This was quick and painless, and I've verified that the replacements worked correctly.

But when I start up Dwarf Fortress and load my game, I still have dwarf names full of diacritics. Is there another step to remove the diacritics that is not detailed on the wiki? (What did I miss?) Thanks for your help.

I just realized what to do (sort of...). I went into the raws for my saved game and replaced the diacritics in the language files there. This fixed everything except some of the names containing o's with accent marks over them (Dodok, for example). That seems strange because I can see that "Dodok" in /data/save/[region]/raw/objects/language_DWARF.txt is correctly without any diacritics. I'm not sure where else to look, to fix this.

First names, I think, are saved separate from the language, probably so that adventurers can have different first names.

IIRC current names are saved separately, as Putnam stated. As such any dwarves currently named "Dodok" with the accent will keep it, but any new dwarves with the same name will not have the accent.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

That should explain all the odd cases - all the remaining diacritics are indeed in first names. Thanks for clearing that up!
