pest control
« on: November 22, 2007, 01:25:00 pm »

so, my dwarves were being disgusted by rats and cockroaches

so i let my kitty loose and he killed them all

i marked them all for dump, but they weren't removed fast enough, and started spewing out 500 metric tons of miasma in every room of my fortress.  now my dwarves are disgusted by pests AND miasma

kitty continues killing pests, and i continue to have to manually tell them to dump them

is there a way to do this automatically, or a way to keep pests from getting in in the first place?  am i doing something wrong, or am I just supposed to be resigned to living in a rat and bug infested miasma stinkhole?

Your dwarves should haul them to the refuse stockpile if you have refuse hauling enabled, and have dwarves with that job activated.

I've never had that many vermin in my fortress. Perhaps once your cat cuts the population down enough it will become manageable?

ya i have a refuse pile and have the orders for dwarves to remove refuse, but they never do it unless i mark it for dump (or maybe i'm marking it too fast for dump?) but either way, it still sits long enough for 1 tiny little cockroach to fill up a huuuuuuge dining room wall to wall with miasma.

as for killing the population, i'd like that to be true, but there hasn't been any decrease in new rats and roaches popping up, and i've noticed lungfish are now coming down my stairs ...

i start building pet proof hatches and doors on everything, but nothing stops the little buggers

my food stockpile has 2 dead roaches, a lungfish, and a dead rat in it, and that is just ONE of my rooms, and everybody is too busy to move them

the only way i've found to get rid of the constant miasma is to get rid of the cat, and then i'm left with the pests

I've never had miasma problems with cats unless absolutely everyone was busy. I think you might've set your refuse orders wrong. (I think bugs may count as other)

Never seen miasma from vermin.

I had this problem too. It got so bad I had to butcher the cat I brought with (ironically, I brought it with specifically to kill vermin). Of course, I was drowning in lungfish (easily 5 visible at a time at the wagon site along a brook) and had 2+ other vermin active in each of my store rooms (5x5-11x11). Eventually an immigrant brought a cat with and I kept that one, after setting a couple peasants to be "Janitors" with only refuse hauling and cleaning enabled. I think the main problem was that my starting 7 were just too danged busy to do any refuse hauling, so they never got around to it until it was too late.

Dwarves don't dump items to a refuse pile, they dump them to a garbage zone. So, it seems to me you must have missed something here. As long as you designate a refuse area and the dwarves do cleaning, hauling etc., then you should be fine.

Ugh, tell me about it. My current city has Demon rats, three horned lizards, one horned lizards, regular lizards, blood gnats, flies, acorn flies, cockroaches, rats, lungfish and pixies. I had to IMPORT cats from the human caravan to take care of them. My food stockpile was a solid wall of pests, and there's never a time that my dump pit isn't spewing miasma from 6+ pest remains.
