I searched and nothing popped up, trying to create sand collection zone on "loamy sand" but it doesn't work.
Tried a channel and a wall and a floor and a square outside.
Does it have to be non-loamy?

Correct, you can't get sand from "loamy sand." Check other spots on the region map. Sometimes when a creature walks over grass, it will reveal the mineral type beneath it. Of course, some maps won't have any sand.
