Raising the roof?
« on: December 02, 2012, 01:26:22 pm »

Is there any way, once you've embarked and begun working on your fort, to raise the number of levels above the ground?  I'd really like to be able to add another couple of floors to my cast-obsidian above-ground megaproject, but I've run up into the ceiling.  Any possibility of hacking the save file to give me a few more levels?

No, the amount of levels above the ground is determined at world generation. Someone might know a way of using a hex editors to change something to raise the number, but I wouldn't bet on it.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Is it really a hard cap? I thought that if you built something like a stair way up into the unbuildable level, it would just let you keep going, at least that's something I thought I heard one time, I've never actualy tried it.

It appears to be a hard cap.  My pump stack is currently built up to the top of the world.  If I try to build another stair on the topmost level, it gives me the message "Cannot build on highest level."

If you want to increase the sky limit, you can set a world gen option.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Wouldn't that require regenerating the world and starting the fort over?  I'm asking if there's a way to raise the roof in an existing fort.

It's impossible without regenerating a world. Those are defined at the creation of the world map. Kind of like what goes on underground.
