Cheap decent laptop
« on: November 20, 2012, 12:41:46 am »

My current laptop is on its way out, due to a problem with the bit which connects the battery and charger. In case repairs aren't possible, or are unreasonably expensive given that apparently no mechanical damage is covered under warranty (nor any damage done by viruses or other companies' software. So what is covered?) I would like to get a new one this Friday if possible. I would like it to be as cheap as possible, with my only requirements on performance being that it is at least as good as the one I have now (minus the damage), though of course if it's a really good deal I'll go a bit higher. I am not very knowledgeable about computers, though I hope to change this, so what I'm about to write will be pretty much copy/pasted. Current laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742, with an Intel core i3 CPU at 2.53 GHz, 4 GB ram. OS is Windows, which I would like to stick with for now. Hard drive doesn't matter, as I have about three external hard drives and the only problem with my current laptop is the battery, so that gives me an additional one to use.
Thank you.

The warranty probably covers manufacturing defects or premature failure of components, but not damage you've done.

If you want to use it for games then try to get one with a real graphics chip (not Intel, Via or Sis), i.e. nVidia or AMD/ATI. AMD Fusion based laptops are generally pretty good for their price... Look at the 2nd digit of the model number of the graphics to get an idea of performance, i.e. an nvidia 580 is much much better than a 610 (8 vs 1).

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I guess i should have specified, I'm not really looking at this for gaming. I'm fine with my current laptop's level of performance, it's just broken.

I've had good runs with netbooks, and they're dirt-cheap. Just don't expect anything but low-power games to work, though.

considering that hes running on a i3 that would be a huge regression :P

The new AMD trinity are best class for the long traveler with casual gaming, most their chips can last 5 hours watching movies.
