Elves give me wood
If you like them so much, go marry one.
Don't worry, it's just a phase. It passes with spring.

Every fort I make turn into Isengard, because wood is the lego of kings.

I don't know about unicorns, but back in .95, one of my PA soldiers was diagnosed with power armor. I drew a fairly good picture about it, but my science project (a bunny) pissed all over it.

If I misjudge my embark then I tend to run out of wood.  I like to try and embark in an area that's half hill/mountain and half trees so I have enough trees to keep me satisfied until I get lava... which rarely happens.  I tend to constantly use wood for beds, as I like having at least one bed for each dwarf since I'm a nice guy, and always make wooden bolts for training purposes for my military dwarves.  That's not to say anything about all the bins, barrels, wheelbarrels, and charcoal I need to use wood for.

I do remember the one time I ran out of trees in an embark that had only a very small area of green and the first cavern was, thanks to dfhack to find it, 80 Z levels down.  I had to constantly request wood from the dwarves and luckily elves gave me an incredible amount after their first caravan which I had to use almost entirely on charcoal so I could make metal.  That was a very nail biting fort experience.

I ran out of wood once. My elven diplomat gave me an ultimatum of no tree chopping. In retaliation, I politely told him to go screw himself, atomsmashed his entire caravan, and cut down every single tree on my map. Which I then used to make a soap tower.

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!
