I recently made an archery squad with crossbows, and I wanted to train them in a death pit, but as I learned the hard way, they grabbed everything except ammo and because of kill command they rushed in the death pit (which I forgot to lock) and proceeded to die. Could you please help me with this? how to make them actually grab ammo, if they are literally standing on it?

Do they have quivers? You need quivers to carry ammunition. It should be automatically carried if you have them with a crossbow, but you need to have actually made or traded for quivers before they can carry any bolts. Make sure they have ammunition assigned in the military screen (m > f)

Do you have enough quivers for all of them? Check ammo assignment ( it don't always get enabled by default on starting up as non-ranged squad ) for 300 ( my habit, you can leave 250 default ), lower or null hunters' ammo if you don't have many of them.

yes, I checked and they did have quivers, except they were empty

What's the military screen say for the ammo the squad is assigned with?

If they're assigned ammo, you might wanna reduce what hunters have, I've had ammo issues in past because hunters claims most of them and didn't left any for military.

all my hunters are already dead, but I will try that military screen with my next fortress (This one got roflstomped by bears while I was not looking)
