Forgotten beast defense?
« on: November 16, 2012, 02:01:52 pm »

2 questions in this post:

1.) Do forgotten beasts attack demons and other underworld spawn?

2.) Is it possible to trap forgotten beasts in a small room until needed? Possibly via draw-bridge?

Obviously if #1 is impossible, #2 doesn't really matter. But I thought it would be cool to sit inside my soon to be constructed war-room with my expedition leader shouting "Execute order 36-B!" as the feral forgotten beasts hunt down the demons in the fortress.

1)Randomly generated creatures (so FB's, titans, clowns, and possibly [not 100% on this one] night creatures) all get along fine with each other. So if you want to do an HFS defense with FB's it won't work. Nor will syndrome carrying things affect HFS either since they aren't GENERAL_POISON.

2)Yes it is possible, though it takes a lot of work and usually requires a sacrifice. Bridges won't raise or lower while there is a FB above/below them, but they will hold them in (unless it's a very hot FB) for as long as you need. And while they might not be much use in fighting HFS, it certainly makes a fun pit to throw goblins and other enemies into.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

IIRC they don't attacks each other, at least the inorganic ones almost definitely don't. This' second-hand though, but if you get web-spraying one, it might still be worth trapping just for bragging right and FB web :D

If you're in a husking biome, you could use it, though, there've been tests with husks fighting demons.

Hm. Would a moat filled with carp be a decent defense? Or do they not attack demons either?

As amusing as this idea is, the carp would be destroyed. Many demons are extremely hot and would evaporate the water, leaving them to air-drown. Even without that, a demon is ludicrously powerful. The carp would be quite thoroughly obliterated. Just today I faced the clown car against two cave dragons, a giantess, two voracious cave crawlers, a GCS, some blind cave ogres, and a few other random things. They didn't stand a chance. The ten legendary adamantine-clad swordswarves lasted a bit longer but were eventually overwhelmed.

The only FB I can imagine being useful at all against demons would be one of the rare few made of diamond or other silly things. Webs would be a good bonus.

Well if COD players all have ADHD, and Minecrafters autism, then what do DF players all have?
