Hi

I have just killed a kobald thief a long way away from my caves - will his loot (weapons and cloths) automatically get collected if i have dwarfs set to haul or do i need do something else?

You'll need to claim it using d-b-c, then designating the area around his items. Or, you can use k to view singular items and then claim them one at a time.

and also you can turn on feature to claim loot in orders menu. This will make it fully automatic.
But one day it will surely end up with something like
