A bit of sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) is probably your best bet for on the cheap.  It's an effective cleaning agent that has been used for years and is still in use today.  Plus it's non-toxic.  I mean your body produces the stuff naturally in your bile (counter's your stomach acid).

Anyway, with Nikov on this one. No offense to those who gave advice, but kinda skeptical that any home remedies will damage teeth less than the professional ones. I mean, heck, the dentist did spend his life on teeth and knows to keep damage to a minimum. Then again, dentists are salesmen and the guys on the Internet don't profit anything from your white teeth. But if they were dishonest, they probably wouldn't tell you that it damages anything.
