Mac Problems! HELP! Prease?
« on: November 19, 2012, 01:39:10 am »

Hey there guys. I have been trying to embark on my newly downloaded mac version of DF, and am unable to add skill points to my dwarves. I have been able to outfit 3 at the most before it stops allowing me to add points. I still have points for each of the other dwarves but it does not let me. Any idea whats going on? I wanna play DF again!

I am on a mac, and I think you need to hold down shift and '+' in order to increment the skill points upwards.

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.

yah. But the issue isnt adding points to the first few dwarves. Its adding them after it stops letting me add. I can add to 3 dwarves and then the fourth only lets me put 8 points in then stops letting me add. Its not a freeze, it allows me to select other dwarves just not add points.

Not to offend by asking stupid questions, but do you still have points left to spend? Remember that each additional skill level in the same skill costs more embark points as well as all points spent previously (so a level 1 skill costs 5 points, a level 2 costs 6+5=11 points, a level 3 costs 7+6+5=18 points, etc.).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Did you added more equipment/supplies before assigning points? Tried to leave behind some of them and tried again? It sounds more like you ran out of points.

I have more points. And no. I always do dwarves first. Food and such later.

It's been there the whole time. It's just that in 34.11 you get less points to spend due to needing to take along a wheelbarrow and some other stuff. Get rid of some of the stuff that it auto-puts into your embark items and you should have enough points to finish assigning skills.

Also check to see if you have steel anvil instead of iron, steel ones are 300 points while iron is 100. I believe same applies to default tools made out of metal being steel ( and more expensive than iron/copper) if other metals aren't avaliable.

I always remove/change embark inventory before checking and setting dwarves up, though I've stopped bothered giving them skills :D

There are only Steel anvils on the list of items to add. :(

If your dwarven civilization doesn't have access to iron then the only metal that they can use is steel (due to a weird thing where the game doesn't actually check to see if they can make steel, it just knows that they know how to make steel so it gives them steel). Personally when I run into this problem I just put off buying an anvil till the human or dwarven caravan comes, since the humans usually have access to iron and you can probably trade for a steel one from the dwarves if necessary with a small number of items. And unless you plan on getting a metal industry running in the first year there isn't much need for an anvil anyways.
