Quick q about building destroyers
« on: November 08, 2012, 12:54:02 am »

Will building destroyer that is currently destroying my door be distracted by a bunch of axedwarves that came to kill him? Or the door is now the primary target and he either demolish it or die trying?

He should turn to attack the axedwarves if they show up on top of him, though I'm fairly certain he won't redirect until they come into line of sight.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

From what I've read, the answer is "it depends".

I've heard stories of a bronze colossus pathing to a door, thinking "DOOR SMASH", but getting distracted by a kitten, turning around, going to the other end of the corridor and flattening it, then going back to the door, then noticing another juicy target and running after it, etc.

But I also know that building destroyers tend to be attracted to high-value furniture within their line of sight. To the point where, say, an Artifact Cage can serve as a very effective lure that keeps them swarming around something they can never destroy.

My suggestion? Deploy the Atom Smashers.

and if i have a artifact wooden statue standing just before my main entrance, i can safely wait for a dragon/titan/colossus to start "destroying" it, then safely deploy my military to make a quick work on him?

Well, see, you brought up the problem.

Artifact wooden statue. It won't be destroyed, but it will burn. Indefinitely. And smoke makes dorfs EXTREMELY pissy.

I would also suggest trapping them instead of sending in the military. Construct a giant 10x10 bridge, set it to retract, then build walls atop it to make the intended victim path towards the center in a spiral, where the statue is placed. Once it gets close, have a pressure switch or lever or something to make the bridge retract, dropping our unlucky creature into a giant hole. Make sure to have a backup device linked to the bridge, so you can close it in case of flying creatures.

it will burn.

damn, I forgot about this! )
but the question is to kill a building destroyer with a melee dwarves or archers. Preferrably with archers. Are they safe standing 20 tiles from FB and stuffing it with bolts?

Nope, though they'll have more time to pelt the beast if it's oblivious enough, it'll eventually notice and chase your dwarves anyway.
