Waterfalls
« on: November 06, 2012, 11:59:06 am »

I have a question regarding waterfalls, mist, and windows - specifically, does a dwarf have to walk *through* the mist to get a happy thought, or just see / be near it?

I have a beautiful location at the juncture of four rivers with multiple waterfalls (world gen pasted below).  It has sand, clay, and soil, and the river bed is lined with marble and silver.  I ... I'm going to cry tears of joy into my dwarven beard.  I'm thinking ahead to how best to leverage the natural mist above the waterfall bottoms.

Here's the world gen text I got from doing an export immediately after arriving:

Here is a link to the wiki. It suggests building grates under the falls and allowing everyone to walk through it. It is what I did for my fort. A 5 wide path that leads to the bedrooms and dinning area.

I don't know if glass works or not, but you can make a rock tunnel around it if you want.

IIRC they have to walk through the mist to get the happy thoughts. Mist spreads out as it falls though, so they don't have to be right under the mist source in order to walk through the mist.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Interesting embark point - I have the path to the dining/meeting hall running behind a waterfall, so they all get happy thoughts.  OTOH, marble starts at Z-7, with no iron ore in sight.  Most of the levels from Z0 to Z-7 are taken by empty space above the major river, so there's not many places to look.  The river(s) itself are on Z-8.  Caverns start at Z-12, and there's multiple passages connecting them.  SMR is at Z-35.  My magma forges are on Z-29.  I may be outfitting my military in all silver armor, since that's the only metal I've found so far :-)

Don't. SIlver is too darn heavy. I think they'd be better off with leather / bone armor than with silver.

I don't think you can make armor out of silver.

Just warhammers out of silver, I guess.

Praise the miners!  We have the blue stuff ... although I remember what happened last time around ... would it be some kind of record to lose to HFS the first year? ;)

I've seen a few HFS losses within first season :D
Those tend to be from the worldgen bug of bluemetal tube to surface, though.

Does mist pass through fortifications, grates or vertical bars? If so, there's your alternative to windows.

My current fort doesn't have any iron but tons of flux. It does have tons of silver and gold though. I make electrum statues and sell sell sell! Ended up buying iron/steel toys and such and just melting everything down and making my own steel. Of course given your silver, making hammers would be the way to go.

The mist does indeed go through rock wall grates.  You do lose the space they're built on, but at least it's not a gaping hole into my dining room :-)

Make them high quality and from a decent material and they'll contribute to the room.

Is there a way to keep mothers from loosing their babies when walking through a waterfall?  I've built them to clean off my dwarves, and get tired of the spam.  Even with few babies.
