It's comments like this that make me wonder if I play the same game as everyone else...

I really don't need DT. I mean sure, it has it's uses, but, ehh.

Yeah, I just let migrants hang around in the legendary dining hall doing whatever until I need more Dwarves for something, then I assign jobs as required. Don't get what's with all the melodrama.

That's exactly what I do.  I have tons of dwarves doing nothing and suddenly I decide to make a huge tower outside.  Then, suddenly everybody is a mason...

Lol, this. I used to use Dwarf Therapist, but finally got tired of it. It has its uses, yeah, but I like DF better without it.

for me its getting rid of the ASCII that really allows me to play the game.  There is honestly no way i can possibly enjoy this game with ASCII.  I use DT to quickly manage who DOESN't do something more than who does, if that makes any sense.

but in these last few days i have really been enjoying the complexity of the game, but frankly i need a little eye candy.

I still haven't gotten into using DT. I don't really have a need for it.
The only thing I would use it for, but I don't know (for lack of trying) if DT can do that: Show me what jobs were activated on a dead dwarf.

Oh, and welcome to DF, enjoy the ride!

Welcome to DF!

I guess that everyone has their needs to like a game, but the important thing is that everyone (well, almost) who tries can find a wait to play that is more enjoyable to them. I, personally, like the ASCII and find the graphics packs even more confusing. My opinion on this is that everyone should give ASCII a try and, if they like the packs better, then they should try the ASCII when they are used to the game. Not because it is necessarily better, but because is the official look of the game, the one used by the wiki, and I think all visual examples should se it to maintain uniformity and clarity. IMHO there is no sense explanations and examples using different symbols, because it gets confusing and, although obviously many will disagree, if there is to be one standard look for these, it should be the original.
I also never used DT. Nor do I leave the migrants to do whatever they want. I actually like to look at them one by one and decide what each of them will do. DT could do that for me, but to do that inside the game makes more sense to me. Also, I have become so used to the keys involved in doing this that it takes no longer than a few minutes for a big wave.

I really needed DT when I got my first big wave today, I went from 18 to 44 dwarfs....

Is that normal?  I am really catching on and have been experimenting with water flow.  Trade is nice and noble management is easy to understand.  I was getting abused by thrives but the wiki taught me how to deal and I killed my first one before I had to head to work.

I am having lits of Fun but I have yet to see any !fun!

I have never used DT, and only used graphics of any sort when mods came with them.
I really can't understand anuthing but ASCII.

Big migrant waves early/midfort are not uncommon. Set up some 10x10 plump helmet farms and you should be OK.

Just wait until you mass produce lavish meals.  If I wanted to, with my fort, I could buy an entire caravan of steel... everything with the amount of food in my fort right now.  I left Lavish Meals and Brew Drink on Repeat... I now have over 2,000 of each.

Forgo lavish meals if you feel them exploity as I do; and adopt weaving cloth goods!
It takes a while to set up and maintain with skilled craftsdwarves, but the end result is buying out everyone's caravans with cloth goods, the ultimate mercantile foolery around.
