Friendly Fire - feedback requested
« on: October 27, 2012, 12:33:55 pm »

I've made a game, and I would love some feedback on it. It's currently in 0.95a. Feel free to post your high scores to help me judge the difficulty. It was written in C# and developed in Unity.

Fly around your ship, trying to dodge enemy missiles. However, you have no guns- you must cause the enemies own missiles to kill themselves. Featuring varying enemies, upgrades, powerups, and more.

I'm not a good gamer, but to me, the missiles disappearing when they are both close to each other and parallel seems... weird. Just weird. :/

Had a few goes on it ... it's good fun.

Trying to think of a few things that could improve it, IMHO:

- As Skyrunner says, the missile 'death' is a bit weird. Maybe it could have a death animation or something.
- The main character lacks 'character'. Perhaps it could have some kind of additional things happening with it. Rotating lights, greebles or something else.
- I find the missile turn rate a bit weirdly fast. You can get an enemy to hit itself as the missile pops out, does a 180, and thumps in to the things that has just fired it. It's fun, but it seems a bit weird. Have you tried it with more laborious turning?

Ooh, something else I thought of: If the missiles slowly sped up, that would be nice, too. Speed up, then brake on turns...
But it's a minor thing.

Newtonian physics on the player would make it more fun, and perhaps make missiles not collide with each other.

Ok, in addition to squishing a few minor bugs, I added a more interesting player and small explosions for when the missiles disappear. (If I didn't have them disappear, eventually you would be surrounded by so many the game would be impossible.) They also speed up a bit after launch, though this isn't very noticeable until the higher level missiles.

As to the missile turning rate, I kept it the same. If it doesn't turn as fast, the game is a fair bit harder, which we don't really need.

I'll post a version in a bit. (aka when I stop being lazy and compile it)

EDIT: Here it is, if you're interested: http://www.mediafire.com/?909dm7azt0rv142
