Maybe if you put the depot right up the road, walled in with drawbridge sides, it'll give you a chance to do a trade before time runs out?

I know there was a trick of using designation and holding mouse button down to speed up the loading/unloading in 31. at least, but I don't know if it works in 34.

Well if COD players all have ADHD, and Minecrafters autism, then what do DF players all have?

If I understand the mechanic correctly, each item on the wagon takes a certain amount of time to load/unload, so even if the weight and value of two caravans is the same, the one bringing hundreds of cut gems and small stacks of food will take much longer to unload than the one that brought a few dozen gold nuggets and bins of silk cloth. Same when they're leaving with a thousand mudstone figurines of yak cows or whatever, it'll take a long time to load (though that's less of a problem as long as it happens after a trade).

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

That's a shame, it was pretty useful for stupidly overloaded caravans
