Very little difference now, and no advantage to using training weapons unless you're swimming in wood or want to use them to beat something to death slowly for more practice time.

Other use for training weapons is spear if you are setting up a danger room, and your woodcutters can use a training axe to cut down trees.

Generally, training weapons are "harmless". Barring unlucky critical hits, they aren't sharp enough nor heavy enough to cause any serious damage. Plus most hits will be blocked by clothing for further protection.

Any metal weapon has good chances to go through clothing and damage the dwarf, so they aren't ideal for sparring.

But this won't happen when sparring in the latest version.

Since sparring with real weapons is safe, and since dwarves would become "attached" to a training weapon if they used it, training weapons only exist for game exploits and cluttering caravans.

EDIT: Ironically, wrestling used to be the "safe" way to spar back in 40d, but it can now cause lethal accidents due to the introduction of "skidding" damage after a wrestling throw.

Training weapons are useful to cherry tapping prsioners to death-thus boosting the experience your dwarfs earn. And for Danger rooms,
of course, if you are feeling exploity.

I use training weapons frecuently in adventure mode. You can win exp ultra-fast this way.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

I have lost at least 5 legendary dwarves to being thrown into walls/statues/armor stands

Beat something to death slowly for more practice time.

This is an epic thing to say!

In adventure mode i know wooden weapons are the best for pratice
in fortress it slightly useless unless you sell mastercreated weapons or wooden spike balls
