Trade Depot Inaccessable.
« on: October 10, 2012, 04:56:23 pm »

I tried doing everything to get my Trade Depot accessible, and I just can't. I smoothed the stones, cut down the tree's and gathered the plants to make a path, I even built a dirt road, and I still can't get access to my depot. Here's a picture of my fort, zoomed out so you can see the road:

I avoided building the depot in case I needed to relocate or something. Although I read that the wagon arrives from whichever edge is the most convenient, so I'll probably just go ahead and build one. Any idea's on how I can get this working?

Also, out of curiosity, if I embarked on a small island, would I not get a caravan regularly?

You want the depot in that wider area under your stockpile?  Try removing the ramps around the entrance?

Depot accessability is not checked from the map edge - it is checked from the depot itself.

EDIT: I just looked at the pic, I don't see any problems (the ramps wouldn't do anything), assuming Eisenritter guessed the location the depot goes. Of course, it would be easier for me to check for problems if you used no tileset - CP437 shows things more easily as you don't have similar-looking tiles

It has to be built to be accessible.

Makes sense  :P

Otherwise, hit Shift-d and make a screenshot of the depot accessibility map.
The green path goes from the depot to the edge of the map, see where it ends.

Once you have the Depot built you can use the "D" command to show the path running out from your Depot towards the edge.  (Though I presume you tried that and it didn't show anything at all?)

My last few forts I have been putting my Trade Depot underground around my first stone layer and in a convenient location for my fort and main item stockpiles.  Then I dig a 3-tile wide tunnel towards the most convenient edge in the stone layer and have the tunnel ramp up and surface about 6-7 tiles from the edge.  This exit area is walled off on the surface and the last 5 tiles to the edge itself are blocked on each side with raised drawbridges.  Eventually I get around to roofing the whole thing in as well and often widen the tunnel a bit to help the wagons maneuver.

Since it's the only valid path to the Trade Depot the caravans use it coming in every time.  The pack animals and guards will use other routes out though assuming you have such paths available when they depart.  The wagons go back out the tunnel.

For security there are drawbridges at either end that can be closed to seal it off.  And I pasture some poultry or dogs above the tunnel sitting on grates near the exit to detect intruders that happen to path onto the map there.  (For ~35 years of fort history I've seen two kobolds, one goblin snatcher, part of one goblin ambush team, and part of one goblin siege squad "find" this entrance.)

Of course it has to be built to be accessible, stupid me. I just finished building it and it is, in fact, accessible.

Also, what about the second question, would you still receive caravans on a small island?

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

Oh, if you go the the civilizations menu, it shows you where your caravans are coming from? interesting. It seems I have only 1 dwarven civilization nearby.

From what I've heard, your home civilization is always "nearby," even if the actual Mountainhome is at the opposite corner of the world map. And I've never heard of being visited by any dwarven civ except your own.

On the world map before you pick your embark location. It shows all the civs you can access from that spot.
