By creating a war hammer from adamantine he is showing his modesty. He could be king of the battlefield with an axe or sword, but he's being modest and making something completely useless so he doesn't show up his chummies on the battlefield.

He's so modest that he refuse to make the best of the best with bluemetal, instead choosing to make something that makes everyone rage :D

Are we all ignoring the fact that he named it after himself?

Seems self-reinforcing to me, make the one thing that half of overseers seems to rage at, and put his name on it to remind them who made it, instead of a fancy title that embellishes it's shininess :D

I want to see the description of the artifact!

That's an accident.  He wrote his name on it so no-one would accidentally try using it, and they all thought he named it after himself.

"No guys, it's called 'The Pleading Undying Certificate,' really!"

"Whatever, Mr. Modesty."

In general: if a dwarf begins collecting materials for an artifact, brings back the first (base) material, and while going for other materials the first is forbidden to force a different material, the dwarf will name the artifact after him/herself.

In my experience.

I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I thought artifact name was pretty much pre-set once mood hits. And that forbidding the base material results in artifacts made of iron.

Hmm, I wonder if someone's checked that part in disassemblier.

The hammer is a metaphor of himself. Though he is brethren with excellent killers he lacks the same lethality. Dwarves are deep.

Or, he intends to use this to drag out any fights he has and torture the enemies, slowly smashing their extremities off until they bleed out.

Maybe he just really, really wants to be the Hammerer, so he made a perfect, non-lethal, Implement for the office - then put his name on it, as an application for the job.
