Several questions

Still new at this, so these might be common knowledge, but anyway:

  • Is it a bad thing to build workshops in a space that has not been cleared of the stone material left behind after the space was mined out? From what I've read you only need to dump the stone out of areas you plan to make into stockpiles, but for everything else I can just hide it. I also read that cluttered workshops diminish their efficiency - do the unused stones count towards the clutter?

  • What's the difference between Forbidding a door manually and "Closing" it through a lever, from a defence point of view? Both seem to do the same thing: stopping most invaders but not thieves or anything that can break the door down anyway. Is a lever just an easy way of forbidding lots of doors at once?

  • I gather that for animals to breed, you don't actually need them to be in proximity, just being on the same map is enough, is that correct? I have a male and a female dog, both are in their own 1x1 pastures acting as sentries. Will they still breed or do I have to make overlapping pastures?

  • Last question's a bug... is it just me who gets random areas in the interface getting "blanked out"? It happens only in the full screen menus, like the military screen or the kitchen screen, not when the map is being displayed. It seems like random parts of the interface get overlaid by black squares, obscuring the text underneath. When I press a key I can briefly see the text underneath before something paints over it in black again. It makes it quite annoying when some of those long lists of dwarf names have half the names obscured. I run everything from the Lazy Newb pack. Maybe I should try a manual clean setup.

Edit (just remembered one more thing): I sent a dwarf out to catch something in an animal trap and he brought back a wren. I tried to tame it to use it as a pet, but the "Select Trainer" option in the animals menu is greyed out for it and adding a "Train small animal" task to the kennel does nothing. Is that because it's not tame-able?

1. Items are automatically moved out of workshop areas. Clutter is stuff you make in a workshop.

2. Closing it via lever means that lockpickers can't open it, but it's harder to get to open what you want it to.

3. The creatures in pastures will breed.

4. I'm not sure, but it sounds like TrueType might be on. It's a known bug.

Thanks for the answers, that clears things up

Ah right, I'm using the Phoebus tileset... I did a search for that and it does go away if I turn off True Type fonts with F12, although it sure looks ugly without True Type. Still, useful in those itmes when I really need to read the name.

Any idea on the last point, on taming the wren?

I'm not sure, but flying pets are a bad idea. Vermin, when tamed, are essentially good only as pets; vermin pets occasionally leave their owner's inventory, at which point the owner chases them to keep the game's tenuous grasp on how vermin operate functional. This doesn't end well if Urist's McPet is flying all around. In short: No big deal.

Ah ok thanks. I'll see if the marksdwarves can use it for target practice then.

Vermin can't be used for target practice. Stuff it into a cage with a bunch of other vermin, sell it to someone, and see what happens.

It's simple to get rid of the black square bug. (I tried the F12-F12 but it didn't work out for me). All you have to do is zoom in and zoom out (I use the mouse), after that, the black square gets corrected (for a while maybe, but if it happens again I usually just do the zoom trick again). =)

F10 also refreshes the screen.
