Hello,
I have just found that from last ludum dare mini comp :

Explore the area with arrows and add newness to the unknown.
The further you'll explore, the bigger you'll make it grow.

Well, yeah, I have had some similar problems too. Maybe has it been more succesfull than expected and the place has grown to big... I still find it pretty fun and creative
