Can dogs starve to death?
« on: September 20, 2012, 05:47:56 pm »

I have 4 war dogs... how do I properly take care of them?  Yes I hacked the starting points so I brought 4 war dogs with me. So far they have been lasting. What do they eat? And if there anything special I need to do to keep them alive. I know they can die from enemies kind of easily. But as far as food and feeding or other things how do I properly keep them healthy?

And if there a way to mod the raws etc? To make it so I don't have to feed them or something? I kind of want to bring like 10 of them into my next fort to start.  I know I cheat a lot but sometimes it's fun to go sandbox style on things and try some neat things out. I have played DW legit and even made it quite far... but yes this is in the long term a game of loosing. Eventually something usually messes you up. I lost the game once in a couple hours.

At the moment only 'grazers' (herbivors, basically) need grass to survive. Things like dogs, cats, pigs all do not require food. The most you need to do with a dog is get it some war training so it bites a bit harder. Check the dwarf fortress wiki on Pastures, it should tell you all you need to know.

There's a good spot on the wiki about animal training. You may not that dogs are noted as being good for assigning to important dwarves to distract an enemy whilst your baron gets away. They are good for, say, defending a stockpile from thieving animals, but a goblin with a sword is going to chop it up in no time.

But no, they need no food. Also, you don't need to trouble yourself to "hack" anything to get more embark points. Just go ahead and change it in advanced worldgen. Furthermore, I find that simply adding a few more races, hostile or no, can spice things up from vanilla without changing the gameplay too much. I've modded dark elves, orcs, and frost giants into my game. If you have the aptitude, you should get familiar with the modding board. I'm on there, and nobody minds helping someone learn to mod. There's some great tutorials too.

Thanks everyone, but yes I still have to hack the embark points. It only goes up to 10,000 in world gen! lol  I think I once embarked with well over 300,000 points worth of embankment. And on top of that I hacked the dwarf stat points to unlimited. And I even hack certain important skills like mining to start at 20 for legendary! lol

I was even working on a CE table to start off with embarkment items that don't even appear in the selection list. But I found out the selection list scrolls so I think I no longer need to do that. I thought it was much more limited then it was. But may still do it if I find out there is really good stuff you cannot embark with. lol

20+ War dogs... here I come!  I once hacked it and it took 9+ dwarf over 45 straight minutes just to unload the starting food and cloth type items I started with. I did not even get to wood and and some other types of items.  But I don't need to go that far anymore. I was just having fun.

not to offend you or anything, but that takes everything out of the game I think...

They died for their fellow Dwarves. They will be remembered, at least until your Dwarves see a particularly nice statue.

That's kind of amusing, actually.  But as long as you are having fun, it's all good.   ;D

Almost losing is sometimes fun.
