Well, the method decided on for the Temple of the Great Sock was a pressure plate set to trigger the bridge.  The dwarf is selected by The Great Sock, walks to the bridge, trips the plate and before they can cross the bridge it opens causing hir to plummet to hir death.  Stick a lever in place of the sock, and you should get the same result.

The challenge with the Temple of the Great Sock was that the Sock would chose a new lucky dwarf as soon as the previous dwarf died, and the goal was to keep the fortress alive as long as possible.  For that, I believe the bridge was over a 20z pit, so the odd super-dwarvenly tough selectee would live for a while after falling.
