I got a Baron and they just 'disappeared'

I was playing and I got the Baron, then all of a sudden just poof gone the person I put up for the job lost the title and went back to being a bone carver w/ +10 in fighter skill.

What happened?

It may have been a Vampire, check the new mayor for his history, how many groups has he been a part of? Does he have any food related happy thoughts? Does he have a lot of skills?

Did you by chance draft them into a military squad that was actively training?  I've seen nobles "lose office" when their squad goes active and then get the message "Urist McNoble has become a duke" when they go off-duty and back to their civilian job.

Are they gone from the "N"obles list as well?

Yea, he is completly gone from the list I took him off active military also, to no avail. So he went back to fighting the 3rd cavern creatures that like to invade my fort.
