Greetings this will be my first time playing Aurora truly.Our story takes place in a alternate timeline in which the Soviets *won* the Cold War and the entire planet has been conquered.The game will be set up with the default newbie settings.Any tips/suggestions/etc ?
Of course you can make your own avatars in-game.

Oh god nothing like a noob Aurora run!  The only advice I can give is "your ships are disposable, don't pretend they're important" along with "Dwarf up and mine ALL the resources."

Errr.....how does one rename people/planets/etc ?

For the various people (scientists, civilian administrators, etc), go to the Commanders window (F4). Planets and colonies can be renamed in the Economics window (F2).

if you make contact with aliums, and can't establish a way of speaking with them, it's probably precursors or starswarm.

woe betide you if you turned on extra galactic invaders!

Oh, my, yes. Turn invaders the hell off. Precursors and Star Swarm can be a good intro to combat, though - they never survey jump points, so they'll generally stay put until you figure out how to deal with them.

That can happen, but only if you use a jump point in sensor range of a swarm ship. The Swarm has no survey vessels, but like anyone else, they'll mark jump points that they see in use.
