High Res Square graphic sets
« on: September 08, 2012, 08:06:41 am »

Are there any High-Resolution Square texture packs?
I hate how big the tiles are with 16x16.
Any help would be much appreciated.

There's a limit to how much larger tilesets will improve resolution.  The horizontal minimum is 80 tiles, and the vertical is 25 (this includes menus and GUI components).  This means if your max resolution is XxY, then the largest pixel by pixel a tileset can be before increasing it further doesn't improve the quality is (X/80)x(Y/25)
This means this for popular resolutions:
Resolution     Largest Tileset :: Largest Square Tileset
1600x1050     20x42                      20x20
1600x1024     20x40                      20x20
1400x1050     17x42                      17x17
1280x1024     16x40                      16x16
1280x960       16x38                     16x16
1280x720       16x28                     16x16
1152x864       14x34                     14x14
1024x768       12x30                     12x12

As you can see, the horizontal resolution is the limiting factor here, and until monitors are released that go above this threshold (think 4K) then we're stuck with the resolutions around 16 to 18 (Phoebus and Ironhand, respectively).

Edit: A monitor with a horizontal resolution of at least 2560x800 would be the first step.  That would allow you to get 32x32.

Edit 2: tl;dr??? To answer you more simply, no, the highest resolution set is Ironhand's with the except probably of some lesser known sets for earlier versions.

I wrote a program to resize existing tilesets to the users preferred size.
It uses the hqx pixel art resizing algorithm so the results are of good quality.
There are several examples of the results of my program in it's thread.

I personally use 20x20 tiles on a 1920x1080 monitor.
I could use tiles up to 24x24 at that resolution.
I can take screenshots with 48x48 tiles if I fullscreen Dwarf Fortress across both of my monitors.

Heh, I didn't take 1920x1080 into account.

You should take those screenshots, that would be interesting.

I have done 45x45 before when I was using a different second monitor.
I should do a 48x48 example the next time I update the screenshots for Tileset Resizer.

60x37 of 32x32px squares when using 1920x1200 (16:10 aspect). Sounds plentiful.
But the 80 tiles wide requirement bumps the tileset down to 24x24 :´(
