IRL stands for In Real Life.

It depends on FPS and how much you pause. And how much the game is paused for you.

I've seen mention of one hour for 100 FPS, but I've never bothered to track relationship between FPS and time length. If you mean in-game, each month is 28 days, 3 month to a season, 4 season, around 336 DF days.

In fortress mode, there are 403200 time units every year. At 100 fps, it would take just over an hour in real-time to play through one year.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

...Assuming no pauses and a constant 100 FPS.

If every frame is 1 time unit (as it seems to be based on the estimate on the wiki) and there are 1200 time units in a (Dwarf Fort Mode) day and 403,200 a year then we can determine the following equations:

Seconds = 1200/fps
Seconds = 403200/fps

This assumes a constant fps (The default is 100) and no pausing at all.

Interestingly if you wanted a year to take one hour you'd use an fps of exactly 112. Now someone needs to determine the average time players spend paused per hour and we can standardize how long 1 year takes on a powerful machine.

Don't forget the timewarp that DF can cause (at least for me ;)).
When I start a new fortress there are so many thing to do, that I often wonder where all the time has gone. And it even gets faster after the dwarven caravan, when I dig out the rooms for the third migration wave and build furniture and so on.

It clearly has a substantial effect on perception of time ...
