A Friend of mine in the Planetside 2 World posted this in our Outfit's Forums, nudging me to have a look at it, I sat mouth agape as I watched the vids and listened to this Developer talk about his game, something that he alone had been working on or even living on table scraps to pay a couple of people to help him...

I was amazed at the level of detail and such that he had already finished working on many years ago, and seems like this will be something that will grow even more so...
But, its got just under 2 or so months left on it before time runs out, the only thing stopping me putting money down at this very moment is the Paycheck that I should be receiving next week. Its not here now, thats the problem...

Anyway, I FULLY suggest you look into this, below is what he posted for the thread he made...

In this thread I'm going to be telling you about a new indie mmorpg called Divergence Online that is having a crowd-funding campaign, which I'm going to support, and I'm going to tell you why you should too.

Here is a video explaining Divergence where I discovered the game.

Most MMORPGs these days are boring.
MMORPGs these days are too easy and boring. It's all a hand-holding carnival, where you don't actually get to make any real decisions or make any interesting choices. You go along for the ride, and then get off at the end only just to do it all again. Getting to max level or just leveling up, is something that you expect to do fairly quickly, there's no challenge in this, anyone can get to max level in a few months get great gear and then what? The instant gratification and no substance model has been demonstrated in far too many mmorpgs. I'm not old enough to remember games like Everquest 1 or Vanilla WoW, but it seems back then, you actually had to earn and work for gear, levels, status, awards, not just expect that soon you will receive it for merely participating in the game.

MMORPGs these days allow the players almost no freedom.
Here is an example, say there is an NPC, a King of a kingdom featured in the game. You can visit him hear some dialogue from him, maybe get a quest from him, but in most MMORPGs, nothing more. What do you think it would be like, if the game allowed you to assassinate this King? It wouldn't be easy, you'd have to be skilled and have the right equipment and level. But say if you did, how incredible would that be for your character and the world-story, your character would be making history in the game. Other characters would talk about you, "the slayer of kings". Having the freedom to make choices like this, give meaning and value to games and your character. They make feel like you matter in this game world. That your presence there is significant. Now, I'm not just talking about huge actions and choices like that, but also simpler ones. Say robbing other characters, building player homes in the world (and not having some stupid instanced home), and the ability of other players to play bandits and raid your home, allowing you to defend it. How amazing would something like that be? Think of all the possibilities that could be available to how you play the game.

Divergence Online.

This game is the child of one man who has been trying to make his dream of an MMORPG (of the like I outlined above) a reality. He started the project way back in 2006, but had to stop and start because of lack of money.  He has taken inspiration from EVE Online which today is probably the only MMO that allows the player maximum freedom and choice in the game world. Divergence Online is set in an original sci-fi universe written by the Developer. An interesting universe coupled with an excellent game design philosophy, and game-play that gives value to your actions and meaning to your character, the only thing this Developer lacks in funding. So he has launched a crowd-funding campaign on IndieGoGo.

He has released two videos explaining the game:
Divergence: Online Part 1 "The History"

Divergence: Online Part 2 "The Future" (22 Minutes of Awesomeness) Skip to 08:20 to see the game's current state.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAFJ8FxJFnw

I will probably be contributing $100 to this game as I think it's well worth the while and I hope that I have convinced you of that as well.

Though I agree with the idea that currentday MMORPGs are boring, I don't see why this one would be different. Right now, it just sounds like a spiritual successor to Star Wars Galaxies.

Looooots of talking and text, not much actual gameplay to show for it. This sounds like a pipedream, to be brutally honest. I think he should've waited until much further along in development to try this on indiegogo, because a lot of people would be wary of putting down money for a game that only has an environment to run around in so far.
