Stuck in a fortress tower?

Hi guys,

So I visited a fortress and found a tower- basically a small room with a bunch of upward slopes leading to higher levels. But now that I've reached the top I can't seem to get down! Using look I see a downward slope and a floor hatch and I need to use alt+ to move into it, but nothing happens. I've tried > to descend and I've tried u to interact with the hatch, but I can't seem to do anything. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

PS- yah I'm a total newb, but I did have a poke around the forum, used the search, and googled without much luck.

The hatch is directional, you have to step onto it the way you came out of it going up. It's like a spiral staircase, but with walls of utter force for railings.

Oh... jeez. Yeah, that worked, thanks.

Boy, this game is game is obtuse. Entertaining though! Just before I got stuck in the tower I jumped into a river to get a get drink (before realized I could drink from the shoreline) and my companions followed me in, floundered in the river, and presumably drowned. Simpletons.
