I've had good artifacts in other fortresses, but I am currently getting useless things like bone crowns. I have excess steel, but they insist on wood and bone.

Well, could be worse, they could be using that steel on useless things like rings and mini-forges!

I have to say, I disagree with the whole Fractal Artifact idea. Were the artifact originally made with an image of itself on it as part of the design then, yes, it'd be fractal, but it seems to me rather that the design on the ring isn't part of the ring's construction, but rather a decoration on top of the standard artifact.

Essentially, Dwarf makes ring, thinks, 'I want to decorate this ring! But what with... presumably something bitching... this ring is pretty bitching... a-hah!' and sets about putting an image of the ring on the ring.
I for one would love a pewter goblet with an image of the (original, not engraved) goblet on it.

(Of course, the artifact is now no longer engraved with an image of itself, as the image is now outdated, oh conundra!)

Oh, and Dante, I think that's on the cards. But for now we just have legendary child stonecrafters producing doors with impressive names and high DB values.
What I'd like to see is, a few years from now when Dwarf Fortress is capable of it, Dwarf refugees abandoning their fortresses and taking their artifact sceptres and so on with them, and maybe eventually having to pawn them off in exchange for a more liquid unit of exchange. I could have an archeological adventurer who becomes so intrigued by a dwarfish ring which worked its way half-way around the globe that he sets off to find and document the fortress where it was originally made.

But dwarves who get possessed to make things like this are incredibly perfectionistic ("I need cave spider silk and ONLY cave spider silk will do! None of this Giant Cave Spider shit that's in the stockpile!") and therefore, once they decorate their beautiful artifact with an image of itself, they are compelled to fractalize it, as once they put this decoration on their artifact door or what have you, it is an imperfect image until the decoration itself is added onto the decoration. This continues on until the fractal loses its self-similarity at around the atomic scale - unless the dwarves have tools capable of carving individual protons, which, if they're working with Adamantine, they might very well have access to.

Technically, the dwarf probably wanted yarn or plant-cloth. The idea is pretty much right, though; dwarven artifacts have craftdwarfship of the highest quality. This implies perfection. This implies fractals. This implies that we will be arguing about it until dwarves figure out how to come out of our computers and kill us. Except for those of us who wisely kept DF in their flash drives instead.

One could avoid the fractalist interpretation if the dwarves do the engraving in, say, an impressionist way. Or cubist. Or dadaist. Perfectionist does not equal realist.

Although the universe-folding hypothesis is obviously the truth.

The universe-folding idea is amusing but not canon. I like the fractal and cubist theories best.
