Creature creating guide?
« on: August 30, 2012, 01:31:10 pm »

Hello, I've been googling for a guide about creature creating (From scratch), like a tutorial, but the only thing I've found is the wiki entry, wich doesnt serve me. Does anyone know any guide?

Really the best true tutorial you can find is the one located on the wiki. Other then that the easiest ways to learn are to look at the dwarf file in creature_standard.txt (which has all sorts of Toady's notes on it) and then to never actually start a creature completely from scratch. I mean even experienced modders rarely start a creature from nothing, if just to save time. There is almost always some part of a creature that can be copy+pasted to help speed things up, such as tissues and materials.

If you are dead set on making a creature from scratch, then you might want to check out the streamlined formats linked to from this thread. They provide an easy way to set up new creatures to allow you to make sure that you have everything and didn't accidentally forget to add something in.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
