Armor materials heirarchy
« on: August 23, 2012, 04:15:00 pm »

One of my smiths decided to fluster me today by making an artifact nickel helm (even though I had copper bars handy). I've been searching high and low and have been unable to find any data on how nickel stacks up as armor, but I seriously doubt it's good at all. This got me to thinking though that there isn't much of any sort of comprehensive list of how metals outside of the range of copper, bronze, iron, steel, and candy perform as armor. Has anyone ever put together any such list? This isn't the first time that I've seen utterly wacky materials used for artifact armor and I doubt it will be the last.

The hierarchy would be complicated because DF takes physical properties of material. You'd have to look and compare what they're made out of.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Metal#Weapon_and_armor_quality This could help you guessimate very roughly if you check the raw for nickel

However good rule of thumb is materials not normally used in weapons and armors are noticibly inferior in performance, outside of higher density material for blunt weapons/shield bashing ( There may be exceptions, but I'm not aware of notable ones )

Ed: Oh, and even then, there're still debate about if bronze or iron makes for better armor or weapon materials :D

Well yes, but I've also been told that a brass mail shirt made by another fortress might end up performing better than copper, but I had only speculation to go on with that regard. If I had the know-how, I'd probably just start heavily testing in arena to see if there was any defined hierarchy that could be put together. It would probably put an end to the huge number of "my smith made a [insert item] out of [insert material], should I use it?" threads if we had even a tentative list to go on...

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Bronze

I believe that higher value for yield and fracture, the better, impact against blunt and shear against cutting. I don't know how much each influences the outcome, it also depends on armor types and weapons involved.

From the raws, Nickel is roughly ten time inferior to Bronze. In DF ( as far as I'm aware ) the effect is very noticible if weapon's material is slightly superior to armor's material.

Hopefully someone'll come along with more helpful analysis or information, though modding forum would most likely know how such works :D

And copper for comparsion purpose, slightly more dense but inferior in the specified areas. However still much better than Nickel.
