Cave-ins clarification

I'm a bIt confused about what circumstances will cause a cave in.

Any fully unsupported tile will cave, of course, but I'm confused about large rooms.  I read somewhere that anything under a 7x7 is safe, but I've seen remarkably large rooms in videos and such that seem unsupported.

Can someone clarify this for me please? :D

In very old versions of DF (23a), ceilings would cave in if there were no supports. That is no longer the case, and has not been for some time. Now, there just has to be something holding any given tile up somewhere.

The 7 by 7 is from fairly old version, I believe in the 2D version, which's commonly called 23a.

All you need now is to have anything holding it up from north, south, east or west. Or disable it in one of the init files. Walls and floors supports things.

I see, so no danger from building a 200x 200 cavern then- not that i want to, but i love flexibility.  thanks!

As has been demonstrated, you can channel out an inverted pyramid, Making your entire fortress be kept up only by a single support at the bottom. Which, of course, gets connected to a lever, which in turn gets pulled.

This has been done a lot of times, but the thread linked to above is the first actual demonstration I found via Google. It's quite old, but still a good one.
