Forged Alliance Forever

There's been a lot of involvement from the FAF community to get word out about this wonderful client. Casters and forum goers alike are taking their time to spread word about one of the best, and in my opinion the best, RTS game.

Supreme Commander, as many of you already know, is a grand strategy. It carries close ties to Total Annihilation. You build a base using mass and energy, and using tactics, attempt to best your opponent. There are 3 technology levels, with a 4th 'experimental' one. By Land, Sea, and Air, you'll be fighting your opponents on multiple fronts. The game simulates firing (No Starcraft 1 or 2 tracking shots), and has wonderful graphics. There can be up to 1000s of units at once duking it out on the battlefield.

These features made it unable to be run on most systems in 2007, when it was released. I feel this was bad timing on their part, and so, the community was, and still is, small to this day.

The game was made by Chris Taylor, who also made Tactical Annihilation. He pioneered this kind of RTS.

A year or two ago, the multiplayer client, GPG, was pulled. Now, with technology up ramping, the average computer can run this masterwork RTS, and the community is attempting to make a new multiplayer client and continue support of this game.

FAF Client is made by one man, whose name escapes me. The FAF client is considered by many to be superior to the old GPG one. It's free, automatically updates your game, installs a plethora of mods made by the community, and makes setting up ranked or custom matches easy. Replays are easily assessable, along with a map vault. It can be downloaded here.

You can obtain the game itself as a hard disk for about $10 on Amazon, or a virtual copy on Steam. Impulse also has one that will work with the client. I don't know for other instances of Forged Alliance, but they should work.

The client is for the stand alone expansion, Forged Alliance, so don't mistakenly buy the original, unless you want to play it for the campaign (which is excellent, by the way).

Some Casts:

My favorite caster, Felixlighta. He's currently doing a community awareness series. This one has TLO, The Little One, in it, who you may know from Starcraft 2, and his brother, The Big One. Both sides make effective use of transports.

Another cast from Felixighta, this one shows all 3 theaters of war: land, sea, and air.

Finely, this one was casted by another great caster, praisegugleourmaster. This was part of the IMBA Cup II, a tournament ran recently through the client. It's a very tense, close quarters battle.

Overall, I've been playing on the client when I have broadband internet (currently running Satellite, which is NOT good for competitive play), and the community is very friendly. Hope to see you guys in some matches!

Oh, I wouldn't be in it. I would just watch the replays and update the tournament table.

Though if it falls correctly, I could play. My friend has broadband, so whenever I venture to his house, I can do these kind of things.

*Bump

I figure this could use more attention.

So. What's your favorite faction and why?

I prefer UEF due to the sheer unit diversity. I think they have the most units out of any race.

On Steam vs Impulse: I've had severe problems with downloading the Impulse version and after it finished downloading it tried to use steam anyway, upon what I gave up on Impulse and used Steam to install and play. What can I do to make it work with the Steam version?

> But FAF is both compatible with Steam AND Gpgpnet version.

Found that on the wiki. So it -should- work.

If not: http://www.faforever.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1451

I found that on the forums. If that still doesn't help, you could post your own troubleshooting.

"Edit" The only reason I mentioned issues with the steam version is because when I first typed up the topic, is said on the download page(or somewhere) that there were issues with the Steam version. Seems that's no longer the case, and I'll remove that from the OP.

This is a bit of a necro, but they're running a FAF release show stream right now. (It was technically in beta up until now.) Right now they're running a tournament, but they're also going to do some interviews at some point, and show some showmatches/fun matches after the tournament ends. I think they may have even gotten a short visit from TLO, but I'm not sure as I missed that part.

The first competitive season for FAF is going to start soon! They'll be dividing rankings into leagues (Like SC2 Diamond, silver, bronze...) and divisions of 10, with aesthetic prizes for being the top in your league or division. You will only ever be matched with those in your league, meaning more close games and less getting curbed stomped. More information here.
