Wall grates?

What is there purpose? Is there any situation that fortifications couldn't be better suited for?

They can be linked to pressure plates or levers to create a door that allows fluids through when closed, but allow creatures through when opened.

I should also point out that magma crabs will happily swim through fortifications and scare the crap out of your smiths.

Grates are also more valuable than fortifications.

Carp will also swim through fortifications and scare other dwarves. On the other hand, fortifications can't be destroyed by Building destroyers.
