Why doesn't this silk farm work?
« on: May 04, 2012, 01:17:53 am »

I'm working on a megaproject, (check it out so far if you want, its pretty empty though), and I caught a GCS. But, the farm doesn't seem to work, why isn't it?

As such, the save is provided. Hopefully light can be shed on the issue.

I'd be happy to help, but I don't quite have the time to load up a save file just to take a look. Do you want to post a few screenshots, maybe?

K.
Pretty much a carbon copy of the one off the wiki.
The spider is wild, the doors are not forbidden but are pet-forbidden. That is a kitten there. As you can see, not even dwarves are setting it off. The bridges are hooked to a lever just off screen.

So, any ideas?

Obviously, the kitten has adopted the spider.

Maybe Toady fixed the bug that caused this? On the other hand, I heard that Fire Imps now throw fireballs even without direct paths to the target. Might the same be true for spiders?

When I tried to build a similar design in an earlier fortress, I found that the spider would not fire web if the only path to the target was through a pet-forbidden door. The automated silk design I ended up with used a tame pet GCS on a chain and a goblin on a repeater path, where the goblin was running back and forth between two pressure plates that opened floor hatches to prevent it from escaping.  I have heard that the interaction changes in the recent versions may have changed the conditions under which a GCS will fire web, so my design probably isn't the right one anymore.

forgotten beasts will still fire at targets they cant reach.

For GCS: youde probably be best off sacraficing babie animals to a wild Cave spider and then lure it out into a cage when its time to collect.

The problem is that you used a cat. Cats have AT_PEACE_WITH_WILDLIFE so a GCS will not attack them. Try a puppy.

I tried this as well and it didn't work.  Just put the GCS where the kitten is now, and put the bait where your dwarf is standing.  The GCS will shoot at the bait through a single fortification without needing a path.  There are probably better designs out there, but my silk farm works this way.

My magma crab shot through a fortification at some zombies without a path too.  I think the wiki needs to be updated.

I removed part of the second fortification, and it started firing, and won't stop... Still, its fixed!

Hi,
I've just made perfectly the same design as is described in this Wikipedia article http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Giant_cave_spider to farm GCS silk.
For some reason - it does not work.
This is my design:

Now, I've tried dropping there a goblin thief, and now troglodyte and still it does not want to fire.
Honestly, I don't know how this GCS came into my fortress. I have a lot of traps in the cavern beneath (not just a single row) and maybe it could be from caravans. Anyway - with a hostile creature any GCS should start fireing, right?
Is it possible for animals to calm down?
I don't know - what am I doing wrong here.

It has been said already, wild animals don't attack wild animals and generally ignore invaders. (I had FB's chilling out with goblins for quite a time before they stepped on the same tile and decided that there was too little place for them both in the chamber.)
Try pitting dwarf vampire or non-cat domestic animal.

Yeah, you just made a couple poor choices for the bait animal :P

Try something useless you got from the elves (OH BOY A FOX) or a puppy. Or a rabbit, they're pretty useless.

Rabbits starve. If you have one, you should use a spare vampire. Or a captured goblin. Or an elf.
