ok i wanted to try this challenge so i put my pop to 0. but i keep on getting migrants, why?
First two waves will always arrive, any waves still arriving after that would be the result of the liaison somehow reporting to the mountainhome that there's less than 0 Dwarves in the fortress.

Which is kinda impossible, so I'd go with the former.

If the problem is a lack of soldiers, taking the Sparta route is probably the best plan.  Weren't all able bodied men trained for war in Sparta?  For DF, that means everyone aged 12 and above should be doing military training at least two months out of the year depending on numbers, squad sizes, and how many folks you have for each required profession/activity. :D

If nothing else, spam out a bunch of wood, copper or iron crossbows and a bunch of bone or wood bolts and see how good an untrained militia will be when attacked.  Based on posts in the last few weeks, civs off duty carrying their assigned weapon will, while they have ammo, make a fighting retreat back to the fortress if they spot something hostile.

Zepave Dawnhogs the Butterfly of Vales the Marsh Titan ... was taken out by a single novice axedwarf and his pet war kitten. Long Live Domas Etasastesh Adilloram, slayer of the snow butterfly!
Doesn't quite have the ring of heroics to it...
Mother: "...and after the evil snow butterfly was defeated, Domas and his kitten lived happily ever after!"
Kids: "Yaaaay!"
