Trouble with mine carts. Am I missing something?
« on: August 10, 2012, 01:47:16 am »

I know I'm a bit late to the game with this but I've only recently begun fiddling around with minecarts. So far I've had plenty of luck with straight tracks, having implemented them to great effect in my split level dining hall to reduce unsightly stockpile clutter (gotta love quantum stockpiles!) However, when it comes to tracks with bends, I've had no luck at all.

I've been trying to implement a track that goes from the surface down to my workshop area a few z-levels below to cart around wood. However, no matter what I try my route always gives me the set dir/connect error message. The directions are all set correctly and the track seems to connect perfectly fine visually.

The track itself consists of constructed EW tracks and EW ramps in the first section which come to a SE bend connected to a length of NS track to the destination. There are two stops, one on each end of the track. I can set one stop just fine without getting a yellow exclamation point in the hauling menu. However, when I set the second stop to complete the route, both stops get the yellow mark and a set dir/connect error. Again, all of the directions are set appropriately and there is no break in the track save for a rising bridge, which I understand is usable as track anyway.

Can anyone see anything I'm doing incorrectly here? Do I need to have more then two stops, or am I skipping a step? Are there any common mistakes I should be aware of? If anyone can show me my error or  point out a minecart tutorial I would be extremely grateful.

Simplest answer is that one or more of your ramps aren't track ramps.

Is this all over stone? If you're designating the 'carve tack' a good rule of thumb is to always designate the wall immediately past where your track should end.

Also, check to make sure nothing is mono-directional.

Lastly, you can test to find where your break is by just making test stops; just keep making a new stop with one rule pointing the appropriate direction at every potential problem point until eventually the route errors out. Then you've narrowed down your issue.

Do you have both stops defined?  As soon as you add a second track stop to a route, it pops the "! Set dir/connect track" message up.  Once you define both track stops, it should go away - unless you have other track problems.
