How do you cross the cave river? I've been trying to find a site for a bridge but the cave walls on the other side seem to prevent construction.

Set the bridge to retract and place it completely on the water, with the left edge adjacent to open land.  Then you can cross and dig.

Maybe they should be set to retract by default?  It's a common question, and crossing the cave river is probably the first thing the player is likely to do with an underground bridge...

Actually, is there any reason why the player wouldn't have them set to retract?

Swimmers and fliers are the only one I can think of -- a raised bridge blocks everything, including frogmen that can swim the river, etc.

But yeah, retract default.  Very reasonable.
