Begger's Fort
« on: August 08, 2012, 02:50:06 pm »

How would the cheapest, least valuable yet fully functioning fort look?  Better yet, has anybody ever done it?  I suppose the challange would be to get to the circus with the smallest total wealth...

I've done a few minimalist forts.  Embark with no goods, no skills to a badlands or something.  Backwoods stuff.  No planting, breach caves and hollow huge soil areas for herbalism and wood.  that handles food, wood, booze.  Dormitorys only, a few fairly decent ones and you can handle mood no problems.

Unfortunatly going far to deep caverns and hfs means metal if you use regular combat.  But a crafty trap system is so much more 'boy scout' if you can pull it off as far as possible.  You would be amazed what never building a smelter will do to your wealth.  wood is worth bugger all.

never tried but you migth also consider to turn all labors on on everyone and set skill levels on workshops minimum only (so you have the less quality value on objects) and do only what you need, distroy wath you do not anymore.

I like to start off poor. Just the wagon, maybe an anvil and copper ore if it's a particularly harsh environment. From there I like to build to extravagance though, but my first year with only the wagon probably looks like what you are talking about.

A small wooden hut for housing the dwarves, some workshops and a farm outside. It's functional if not particularly valuable. Just if you stay like that until you hit gobs you are doomed without building defenses.

start with 2 miners, one grower/herbalist.
I can see it having some farm plots, but as said turn all labors on everyone to disallow high value items.
No walls. No stone detailing, which I wouldn't be able to live with.

Would it be possible to start off with 6 miners and one mechanic with enough booze and food, dig straight down to the candy (avoiding veins of metal and gem clusters), dig out a large room fitted with collapsible ceiling, then crush the HFS? In theory, if done perfectly, the only created wealth is from the support, the mechanisms, and the blocks of candy.
