Drunians vs. war dogs
« on: August 04, 2012, 03:12:23 pm »

I was able to embark with drunians and after some years I now have avbout ten adults and a bunch of children. How good are they in combat, compared to dogs for instance? I need reliable fodder to my defence.

thay are bigger than dogs but take longer to grow up (2 years vs 1)
so thay should be better in a fight but not a massive step up.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Okay, but enough to take down random thieves and wildlife without military aid?

Slower growing but stronger actually sounds like a bonus. I get more puppies than my butchers can deal with. :\ Obviously I try to keep a base population as dogs are useful. They have saved many a fort. haha

According to the wiki (and from my own underground experience) drunians have poisonous bites, so that might be a deal sealer.

EDIT: Well, I probably misread some of the raws (with which I'm not proficient, by the way) and gave dubious information, not on purpose. I once saw a couple of dwarves die on their hospital beds from drunian-made wounds, but is open to verification.

Are you sure they didn't just bleed out? Poison isn't the only cause of delayed deaths.

I don't think there's poison in their bites. Propably they died of infection or bleeding.

Indeed, it could've been infection. It's just that it never happened before with wounded dwarves.

Sorry for the misinformation but...
Well, in any case, drunians are better.

Excellent. I also only rarely lose dwarves to infection, mainly due to the fact that I have plenty of soap. Altough cleaning with stagnant water hasn't done anyhting bads either, at least yet.

How to you manage to keep enough soap around? Are you just super vigilant about it?

I only allow my hospital to store soap, nothing else. And then I forbid the dwarves from cooking some individual tallow, like pig tallow. Then I just make some lye and then soap. Any excess soap will cause my dwarves happy thoughts, while the minimum amount in my hospital ensures that no-on gets infections from shitty water.
