Upright spikes, on the other hand, will lower it.

Has this been tested?

Upright spikes are deployed facing up, and anything falling on them will be attacked by all the spikes.

Meanwhile, When I made a execution tower, the gobbo just dodged eveything. Thats why I prefer weapon traps. They attack after they have been stunned by the impact.

Someone did a bunch of experiments about how far one had to fall to die. The thread got locked due to what can be described as Nazi jokes, IIRC, but the data is still somewhere. I'm pretty sure all the subjects that fell at least 10-12 levels died on or shortly after impact. I also think that there was a good amount of splatter at the upper end of the tests (20 zl), but I don't remember.

Depends on if they have armor, what type of metal the armor is and how high their armor user skill is.

20z is fairly sure.

20z + spikes is very sure.

Though, I've had a miner channel 1z, onto stairs, and die.

i think you can still block them with a sheild.
once more armor will help block them.

Before the physics revamp with .34, I could reliably get gibbage with 12 z-levels and ten upright iron spears.  Haven't done as much testing in .34, but I imagine it would take a bit linger of a fall now.

Also, in direct answer to the question in the thread title:
How far must a dwarf fall to die?  Never far enough.

For anyone hoping to do the test, I have a good plan here along with statistics for the first 4 z-levels.
I'm never one for hatch-machinery and suicide booths so I didn't do this myself.
And yeah, doing all of these in a single fortress might murder your FPS.
Statistic is gathered by dropping 4 dorfs. If one dies then it's 25% chance of death, and you get the idea.

Tools:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Methods:

Drop the four dwarfs at the same time for each z-level, count the dead bodies each time and put them into stats.

This won't be very accurate, so anyone with enough time on their hands might want to repeat each z-level (4 dorfs each still recommended)

And here is the stats for the first four, gathered from ten experiments.
It appears that you need at least 2z for instant death.

1 : 0%
2 : 12.5%
3 : 27.5%
4 : 12.5%

And yeah, I know, just by looking at the stats you can see that they aren't very accurate.
