Elves not coming
« on: August 06, 2012, 02:28:38 pm »

It has been 5 years in the fortress, and I have not encountered a single elf, I know they exist, I saw them in worldgen and I live right beside one.
I have not edited the raws, and we are not at war.
Anyone got a awnser?

Are you sure that they have land access to your site? (ie: they are not on a separate island)

The weredwarf Urist McUrist has come! A bearded drunkard twisted into minute form. It is crazed for booze and socks. Its unwashed beard is tangled. It needs alcohol to get through the working day and has gone without a drink for far too long. Now you will know why you fear the mines.

Et tu, Urist

They could be at war with you

The amount of malice in this thread is actually causing me some concern. I mean, chaining up mothers and forcing them to breed, just so we can drown their children to harvest their organs? Does this strike no one else as absolutely horrific?
You misspelled 'hilarious'

They could of been killed off in the year it takes for the embarkment.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

They are not dead, I really wanted an elven caravan,
Not at war, still alive for 5 years, at least 12 civies of elves.
no caravans yet :C

Do they show up on the "c" screen?

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

That only works if you have encountered them. If you do that right at embark all you will see is your native civ. The others don't show up until their caravan arrives. (For Kobolds: First time a thief is spotted, Goblins: First time a snatcher, OR ambush OR siege OR caravan (If you somehow ally them) arrives.)

I'm pretty sure I've seen groups on the civ screen before ever encountering them.  But, then again, I can't be positive...
