dwarves keep drowning in moat REALLY WEIRD
« on: August 05, 2012, 11:21:30 am »

I embarked on an area that has high level river that falls down 6 z-levels where it winds around and comes near to where it was before. I channeled through the cliff to create a moat around my fortress but now dwarves keep falling into the area I channeled and drowning. since they all get pushed to the same place I forbid their clothes and corpses but for some reason dwarves keep falling in. The moat blocks off some map access so I tried to make a bridge over it, but they keep cancelling it's construction. I'm not sure if I'm missing something or if this is a bug.

Channeling makes ramps, and dwarves will walk down ramps to cross a shallow body of water even if doing so will cause flowing water to push them over the edge of a waterfall.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Is there any way I can fix this after the fact?

You could put walls around one side of the moat. It could take a while but that would do it.

I ended up having to do that with a fort I made perched next to a nice waterfall myself. :p

you could always tame a carp and put it in your moat for extra security !

bonus points for having a wild carp in the moat .

mega bonus for having magma instead of water and wild magma crabs in your moat !

ultra insane bonus for having the magma moat with wild magma crabs in your dining hall !!

heh, you must have started recently since there were lots of "help my dwarfs commit suicide jumping off a waterfall" a few versions ago
